Smaller Learning Communities

Four young people, two men and two women, sitting together on a bench in what appears to be a tiled hallway or corridor. They are all wearing casual, winter-appropriate clothing and appear to be engaged in conversation or relaxing together.

A Strong Foundation for Freshman Success

A successful 9th grade year is one of the strongest predictors of high school graduation. Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs) are designed to help students thrive academically while building confidence, organization, and connection during the transition to high school.

Students benefit from strong teacher support, a smaller peer community, integrated cross-curricular projects, and regular guidance throughout the year. Teachers work closely together to ensure students feel supported, challenged, and engaged.

Students take two classes with the same group of peers for:

  • English 9 (World Literature)
  • World History

They attend the rest of their classes with a wider mix of students throughout the day.

Learning That Connects

SLCs emphasize project-based, interdisciplinary learning, allowing students to explore big ideas across both World History and World Literature through meaningful lessons and engaging projects.

Who is a Good Fit?

SLCs are a great option for students who want extra support entering high school, enjoy hands-on learning, and value strong relationships with teachers and peers.

Important to Know
