High School Assignment Process

PLYMOUTH-CANTON COMMUNITY SCHOOLS
DEPARTMENT OF STUDENT SERVICES
HIGH SCHOOL ASSIGNMENTS

Plymouth-Canton Community Schools boasts the only educational park in Michigan. The 305-acre site is home to three comprehensive high schools: Canton, Plymouth, and Salem. Students are assigned to a building as their “home” school for counseling, records, sports, and graduation. All course offerings are available to students, who may participate interchangeably at the three schools. Curriculum offerings are broad, including, for example, auto mechanics, foreign languages, and calculus.

A random selection process does the assignment of students to one of the three high schools. This  random process assigns schools WITHOUT considering racial make-up, talent, or socio-economic  background of the students. Random assignment provides a systematic method for placing students  (a method unaffected by district population shifts).

PROCESS

  1. Point of Entry Assignment (Once assignments have been completed for all students enrolled as of the 2024-25 school year).

High school assignments will be made for each student at the point of entry into Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, regardless of the student’s grade level. This applies to students entering Kindergarten/Young 5s through grade 12. Assignments are made without reference to the student’s home address or to the middle school the student attends.

  • Each student has an equal chance of being assigned to any of the three high schools.
  • Assignments are recorded in the Demographic Section under Membership in MiStar.
  • There are no “redraws.” Because the process is random, twins, triplets, etc., may receive different high school assignments. Families may request that all siblings be placed in the same school by choosing one child’s random assignment for all siblings. This request must be submitted in writing and is irrevocable.
  1. Sibling Rule
The Plymouth-Canton Community Schools Board of Education has approved only one method for requesting a specific high school assignment—the Sibling Rule (see below).
  2. New Students
All students new to the district—at any grade level—will receive their high school assignment at the time of enrollment. This ensures consistency and allows younger siblings to be assigned using the Sibling Rule if applicable. Assignments will be shared with the family, the student’s school, and the assigned high school.
  3. Non-Public School Students
Students entering P-CCS from non-public schools will obtain their high school assignment during the enrollment process.

SIBLING RULE

Siblings are eligible to attend the same high school. Families may choose to enact the Sibling Rule at the time of initial enrollment into the district. This decision is irrevocable.

If a student was given a random assignment in error, a letter must be submitted to the District requesting a change based on the Sibling Rule. The District will respond to the family in writing.

To enact the Sibling Rule for a student whose older sibling no longer attends Plymouth-Canton Community Schools, the family must provide evidence that:

  1. The older sibling attended or was assigned to a P-CCS high school (e.g., diploma, report card).
  2. The two students are siblings (e.g., birth certificates).
